Made from good-for-you ingredients and with a weightless, modern-matte finish that stays put all day, our newest product—Power Play Foundation—is a true game changer. So in celebration of its release (FYI—it’s already a bestseller), we’re shining the spotlight on beauty and lifestyle experts who also never fail to eclipse expectations. From superpower CEOs to makeup mavens and more, these #Powerplayers inspire us with both their how-I-got-here stories and their tips for living a beautiful life.
This week we are taking the Power Play launch festivities up a notch with our Power Play Power Panel, an in-person conversation among a few of our favorite #Powerplayers. Our panelists represent many facets of the industry and the values we support. Here to share our belief that makeup should be vegan and cruelty-free: Tashina Combs of the totally addictive blog and YouTube channel Logical Harmony.
Since 2011, you’ve been a vegan and have been dedicated to using cruelty-free products. How did Logical Harmony (which you launched way back in 2007) come along for the ride?
Tashina: When I first made the transition to cruelty-free products, it made sense to transition the content of Logical Harmony as well. I was already talking about beauty products, but I pivoted to focus on just cruelty-free brands and vegan products. At first, it was a rough transition. I lost most of my audience and most of my brand partnerships. Re-building my audience was a humbling experience, and a truly great learning experience. As awareness for cruelty-free beauty grew, traction picked up and Logical Harmony started to grow again.
What was the point at which you said, “we’ve really hit a struck a chord here”?
Tashina: I'm not sure if I can pinpoint a specific moment. . . Probably the first time that I mentioned my focus on cruelty-free beauty and didn't have to explain what it meant! Growth has been steadily increasing for years and it's been so exciting to see.
When you consider the world of vegan and cruelty-free beauty right now, what are you most excited about?
Tashina: How many brands are realizing that it matters, and how many consumers are educating themselves! It's exciting to see consumers learn more about cruelty-free beauty and use their voices to let brands know that being cruelty-free is important. It's also really exciting to see brands listen and react to it. Some brands have changed their stance on animal testing and many brands have become more vocal about being cruelty-free.
What still needs to be done? How do you use your considerable voice to make change happen?
Tashina: Making cruelty-free beauty truly mainstream would be a huge win. More and more people are realizing it matters. but it would be amazing to see the laws banning animal testing go into effect around the world. The more we as consumers use our voices to express that animal testing for cosmetics is outdated and unnecessary, the more likely it is that brands will take notice.
When fans approach you with interest in adopting a vegan and cruelty-free lifestyle, what do they often identify as their biggest challenge? What advice do you give to help them overcome it?
Tashina: A lot of people find it very intimidating and worry about doing things the "right" way. I always tell people that there is no "right" way. We are all on our own path and it's a journey that is going to be different for everyone. If all you can do in the moment is pick a cruelty-free foundation over a non-cruelty-free option or take part in Meatless Monday, it still matters. All those small choices add up.
We are so thrilled to have you on our upcoming Power Play Power Panel. What topics are you most looking forward to discussing?
Tashina: I'm so excited for the panel! I'm really interested in talking about inclusivity in a variety of ways and discussing how the beauty industry can be a part of that movement.
Who (or what) is your beauty inspiration and why?
Tashina: I've always been so inspired by people who make beauty their own. Growing up, I always felt very inspired by Drew Barrymore and Gwen Stefani.
What do you wish you had more time to do?
Tashina: Travel! I'd love to see and experience more of the world! I would love to connect more with my followers and really want to base a few trips around their locations to meet them. I also wish that I took more time for simple things like gardening and reading.
What is your favorite Cover FX product and why are you drawn to the brand?
Tashina: If I had to pick one, it would be the Natural Finish Foundation. This is my go-to foundation and I've turned so many of my friends on to it. I have always admired that Cover FX is proudly cruelty-free. The brand proves that you can produce high-quality vegan products, and I love that it has always offered such a wide shade range.
